Je n'ai jamais connu mon grand-père, il était allemand, il est mort du sida en 1989, 2 ans avant ma naissance. Ma mère et ma grand-mère m'ont beaucoup parlé de l'artiste qu'il était. Depuis, je suis devenu photographe, et j'ai retrouvé cette série qu'il a peint à l'encre de chine. Il n'avait jamais mis les pieds en Afrique. J'ai décidé de mettre en photo son Afrique fantasmée, ces chefs de tribus, ces rois étranges parce qu'ils me parlent sont une partie de mon histoire. 

I never knew my grandfather, he was German, he died of AIDS in 1989, 2 years before my birth. My mother and grandmother told me a lot about the artist he was. Since then, I became a photographer, and I found this series that he painted with black ink and gold. He had never been in Africa. I decided to photograph his fantasy Africa, these tribal leaders, these strange kings because they talk to me, they are part of my story.
